Writer's picture: Sonya TerrySonya Terry

Last Friday, May 13, high school students from across the state of South Carolina gathered at Sandhill Research and Education Center in Columbia to compete in the 20th annual Envirothon. Teams of five competed by testing in six different categories: Aquatics, Wildlife, Oral Presentations, Soils, Forestry, and the Current Topic for 2016 – Invasive Species. Students were allotted 30 minutes to test at each station. Students placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall in the competition took home not only a trophy or plaque, but also a scholarship valid at any institution for higher learning. In the twenty years the Envirothon has been in South Carolina, over $85,000 has been awarded to students. This year there were not any participating teams from Aiken County. If you are an Aiken County student interested in competing next year at the SC Envirothon please contact Lauren Burroughs at 803-649-4221x3 or e-mail her at aikensoilandwater@gmail.com. Lauren served as a team guide, leading groups of student to each testing station. The pictures below are from the event.
